Antique 1916 - 1942 Rare Silver Coin Bracelet
This fabulous and unique coin bracelet is made from 17 Silver Thre’penny bits (Threepence coins) attached to a silver curb bracelet. Whilst these date from years from 1916 to 1942, this coin bracelet has a timeless, modern quality, despite being steeped in history. This would have been made in the 1940s, these bracelets became very much in vogue during the Interwar and Mid Century periods.
This is a quintessential Sweetheart bracelet, most often made by soldiers for their loved ones. The date range of this bracelet reveals a fascinating narrative about the exact window in which it was assembled, the shifting value of silver during the World Wars, and the changing faces of the British monarchy. The years of the coins are as follows, and feature the relevant Kings’ heads, with various designs to the back, making for a highly interesting and decorative piece:
1916 / 1917 (x3) / 1918 / 1920 ( x 2) / 1921 (x2) / 1925 / 1932 / 1933 / 1935 / 1937 / 1939 / 1940 / 1942
Particularly of note, a silver 1942 threepence in a British bracelet is unusual. By 1937, the UK began phasing out these tiny silver coins in favour of the chunky, 12-sided brass threepence. Silver threepences minted from 1942 onward were primarily shipped out for use abroad, mainly to the British West Indies. This suggests the person who made the bracelet may have been a service member deployed abroad or someone who specifically saved an increasingly scarce coin.
