Vintage 1976 Shell Cameo 9ct Gold Ring
A beautiful hand carved Cameo Shell with a classic pink background and Goddess/ Lady’s portrait in cream relief, set in a solid 9ct Gold ring. Fully hallmarked for London 1976 (The perfect gift for someone stylish who’s 50 this year!)
This delightful piece is a wonderful example of this now rare skilled craftsmanship, a uniquely beautiful piece of art to wear as a modern, highly individual signature piece. Cameos have been popular since early Greek and Roman times, when they were originally used to feature mythical then biblical scenes, and worn by men and women alike. They were a sign of status in Elizabethan times, and Napoleon loved them and wore one to his wedding! Cameos began to be carved from sea shells in the fifteenth century, and in the 1800s Queen Victoria revived their popularity with her love for them. Since that time, cameos have mainly showcased women's profiles, and been worn as many types of jewellery from pendants to rings and earrings. They remain highly prized for their intricate craftsmanship and timeless aesthetic, having been hand-carved from natural shells or mineral/ gemstones to feature raised, three-dimensional (positive relief) carvings of a portrait, mythological scene, or profile.
Cameos have recently come back in Vogue, according to Vogue itself and other style bibles such as Grazia and Elle. However - whatever the fashion of the moment, we love Cameos with constancy, due to their artistry and organic provenance.
