Art Deco Czech Gold, Aquamarine and Pink Diamanté Bug Brooch
A lovely example of a Czech Art Deco Bug brooch, with a lovely gold tone metal set with pretty blue and pink stones. Measuring c35mm in length by c28mm wide, this brooch fastens with a simple C clasp.
Bohemian/Czech jewellers were famous in 1920s - 1940s for creating intricate brass and gold-tone Czech ‘Bug’ Brooches. They typically featured large, vibrantly coloured glass cabochons or faceted stones forming the insect's belly, paired with smaller glass rhinestones accenting the wings and other features.
As seen in this example, the main turquoise glass cabochon (body) is prong-set. Czech makers took great pride in treating costume glass with the same precision jewellery-making techniques used for real diamonds and sapphires.
‘Bug jewellery’ has been enjoyed and worn as protection as well as art for centuries - in ancient and Egyptian times, flies and bugs were worn as amulets to ward off evil and bring luck. The Victorians were obsessed with nature and often wore real gold fly pins set with precious stones like amethyst, citrine, and garnet. In the early -mid-20th century, costume jewellery brands heavily revived this trend by swapping precious gems for realistic, deeply coloured poured glass and rhinestones. Now they are highly collectible and celebrated for their artistry and unique quirky style.
