ONE Pound - Early ‘Mad Money’ Gold Pendant, 1959
Striking and unusual vintage 1959 9ct Gold 'Mad Money' charm pendant. This pendant is a rare, early and fabulous example of the genre - where a real note was carefully folded and placed inside a gold or silver case with a glass front, and stamped 'In Case Of Emergency Break Glass' - as this 9ct gold piece has to the base.
These make uniquely cool and sentimental gifts - as the word 'ONE' from the one pound note, written in the classic vintage font, makes the pendant a great gift for the One you love! This piece has its ring in the centre of the charm-pendant, ensuring the ONE hangs perfectly on a chain. A great signature - and conversation - piece.
The term "Mad Money" historically refers to a small emergency stash of cash a woman carried on a date. The phrase dates back to the 1920s flapper era, originating as "squirrel" money, where women squirrelled away a few shillings or pound notes. It was used as a safety net so they wouldn't be left stranded or financially helpless if they had a falling out with their date. Mad Money charms and pendants were especially popular in 1960s-1970s, as women’s emancipation led to more widespread dating culture.
Fully hallmarked for 9ct Gold, London 1959 and in great condition. The case is solid 9ct gold, with the One Pound note inside (likely 1958 - a collectors’ item itself), with a layer of glass framing the ONE.
Weighs 3.71g, measures 22mm wide x 11mm high x 6mm deep
