Victorian Ivy Etched ‘Everlasting Love’ Cross Pendant and Chain
This beautiful, sentimental silver cross dates from the Victorian age, being fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1891. It has a lovely clean, solid structure, and is hand etched to the front with a particularly attractive design of Ivy leaves. One of the most famous sentimental motifs in Victorian jewellery, the Ivy leaf was commonly used to symbolise everlasting love, fidelity - an unshakeable attachment ("I cling to thee").
Whether to represent Fidelity and Marriage - loyalty and deep, faithful bonds between partners, or between close friends to represent enduring, loyal friendships, the Ivy leaf is there to denote constant love and staying power. A meaningful, attractive and unique gift for a loved one. We are increasingly seeing antique jewellery featuring Ivy being given as a ‘something old’ piece to bring a bride luck on her big day.
This delightful cross has a lovely aged patina, which many people like to see with a piece of this provenance. We have currently only polished this gently with a cloth to preserve the aged appearance, but let us know if you prefer us to give this a deeper clean to restore more shine to the silver.
Fully hallmarked for Birmingham,1891, JWT Makers’ mark - most likely to be the prominent, quality Victorian jeweller J.W. Tiptaft & Son Ltd.
The cross measures 35mm in length by 24mm wide. We have hung this cross on a modern sterling silver 18” Belcher chain, in-keeping with the style of the piece. If you wish to buy this as just a pendant or with a different style of length of chain, please contact us and we can organise this for you.
